What To Eat in Botswana
The Botswana cuisine shares many characteristics with other Southern African cuisines, though much of what you’ll encounter here—particularly if you explore the markets of Botswana—is unique to the country. Natively grown beef is popular throughout and is the main ingredient in Seswaa, a salted and mashed-up meat dish, which is Botswana's famous food and a staple of local culture. Other meats such as goat, lamb, and river fish are also popular, alongside crops such as maize and sorghum.
One of our favourite examples of Botswana food is vetkoek, a kind of pastry filled with ground beef, spices, and vegetables. You won’t find it outside of larger settlements and towns, though. On the other end of the scale, in more remote areas, foods such as mopane worms, underground tubers, and morama beans are also widely eaten and form an important part of traditional Botswana cuisine.
