Icefields Parkway Travel Guide: Canada’s Scenic Drive

Stretching 233 km (145 miles) between Jasper and Lake Louise, the Icefields Parkway is one of the most scenic drives in Canada. Following the Continental Divide through the heart of the Canadian Rockies, it’s packed with towering glaciers, emerald lakes, cascading waterfalls, and excellent wildlife viewing.

While you could drive it in three hours, we recommend devoting a full day — or more — to enjoy the best tour to Icefields Canada has to offer.

Top Stops on Your Icefields Parkway Drive:

1. Sunwapta Falls (Upper & Lower)
A short walk from the car park brings you to the dramatic Upper Falls. Hike 2.8 km (return) through pine forest to reach the quieter Lower Falls — a great leg-stretcher for a day trip.

2. Athabasca Glacier & Columbia Icefield
One of the Parkway’s highlights. Walk the forefield trail or take a guided icefield tour Canada experience on the glacier itself. Visit the Columbia Icefield Centre for exhibits on glacial geology.

3. Parker Ridge
This moderately challenging 5.6 km trail leads to sweeping views of the Saskatchewan Glacier. A must-stop for hikers between July and September.

4. Bow Summit & Peyto Lake
A short, paved uphill path reveals one of Canada’s most iconic viewpoints: the bright-blue wolf-head shape of Peyto Lake.

5. Athabasca Falls
One of the most powerful waterfalls in the Rockies, easily accessible with multiple viewpoints and interpretive signs explaining the geology.

Other Notable Viewpoints & Picnic Spots:

•    Bridal Veil Falls & Weeping Wall – roadside waterfalls worth a photo stop.

•    Goats & Glaciers – a quiet picnic spot with a chance to see mountain goats.

•    Stutfield Glacier Viewpoint – telescopes offer up-close views of this hanging glacier.

•    Bow Lake – Perfect for a picnic with stunning glacier and mountain reflections.

Canada Travel Advice for Driving the Icefields Parkway:

•    Fuel Up Early: There's only one gas station (Saskatchewan River Crossing), and it’s pricey.

•    Pack Lunch: Dining options are limited; enjoy your meal at a scenic picnic area.

•    Start Early: Beat the crowds and spot more wildlife.

•    Watch for Wildlife: Elk, bears, bighorn sheep, and more are commonly spotted — stay in your vehicle.

•    Dress for Weather: Even in summer, snow and trail closures can happen. Check Canada travel advice and road conditions before setting out.
