Chilean Etiquette

Chile travel tips often start with understanding the warmth of its people. Chile is a country populated by very affectionate individuals, where kisses, handshakes, and hugs are part of everyday interactions. Making eye contact while speaking is important, as is using proper titles like Señor or Señora when addressing someone. One of the more useful Chile local travel tips is to be cautious with hand gestures—some that are common elsewhere can be easily misinterpreted in Chile.

When it comes to clothing, dress conservatively in cities and towns. Be especially mindful to cover up when visiting any place of worship, avoiding revealing clothing. Save the bikini strictly for the beach!

Tipping is also part of local etiquette. It’s customary to leave around 15% in restaurants, even when a service charge is included. If the bill already has a service charge, a tip of 5–10% is still appreciated.
