Rwanda Etiquette and Cultural

Rwanda is a very welcoming country, known for its warm and relaxed people. Rwandan culture places a strong emphasis on politeness and respect, especially during greetings, which are often formal and extended. Younger individuals typically greet older ones first, and women greet men first. A respectful handshake using the right hand is common, sometimes with the left hand placed under the right forearm as a traditional gesture of respect, while many young Rwandans have adopted the French-style cheek kiss. Public displays of affection between people of opposite sexes are generally frowned upon, so it’s best to avoid holding hands or being overly familiar in public.

Although Rwanda does not enforce a dress code, visitors are encouraged to dress modestly in accordance with local values. While Rwanda's people and culture are shaped by a variety of tribal backgrounds, it is considered impolite to ask someone about their ethnicity, as the country remains strongly focused on unity and moving beyond historical tribal divisions.
